Fast-Rate Temperature Chambers |

|
The great majority of standard, economical Temperature Chambers on the market are compressor-cooled and
are capable of changing Temperature at a rate of one or two or three °C per minute. (This is true across our
industry, regardless of supplier). This is a perfectly satisfactory ramp-rate for most applications, and
represents a reasonable compromise between ramp rate and control finesse. It also keeps chamber prices
affordable.
If you require a faster ramp rate than a few °C/min, either to satisfy a Test Specification, or to quicken
up the test cycle time to increase thruput, then there are three general approaches we can take:
- Boost cooling and heating horsepower. Increase the size of the
refrigerant circuits and the compressor(s). Increase the wattage of the heaters. Increase fan output
to boost convection. Essentially build a more "muscular" chamber that costs a bit more upfront and will
consume more electricity. This approach yields ramp rates in the range of 5°C/min to perhaps as high as
20°C/min.
- Add a little Cryogenic cooling. Sometimes referred to as a "Boosted"
Chamber. By adding controlled injection of Liquid Nitrogen or Liquid Carbon Dioxide during the cooling
ramps, we can accelerate the ramp rate.
- Switch to Cryogenic cooling. A very common approach is to completely forgo any
compressors and utilize cryogenic injection exclusively. This enables users to dial in ramp rates anywhere
from extremely slow to well north of 50°C/min!
